Who do people say that I am? This question of Jesus surpasses time and invites us to reflect on various images, names and metaphors we might use as we seek to comprehend what following Jesus means to our lives. In the season of Advent, as we light our Advent Candles, there will be an opportunity to share sentences of who Jesus is. A couple of examples are: 1) To me, a student, Jesus is like a teacher, who helps me to learn and grow; 2) To me, a seed, Jesus is like a loving gardener, nurturing and caring for me. Let your imagination go – when you see something or recognize a role – think about how is that an image of faith. For example – “To me, an LRT train, Jesus is like an open door …” Okay, that may not be the best example!
This season of Advent is a time to reflect and live the significance of Jesus and his teaching. It is a season when we celebrate his birth, remembering that without his teaching, his death and the experience of resurrection, we would not be having pageants and singing carols. So, in this busy month, let us reflect on various metaphors of who Jesus is and cherish anew the fit of Emmanuel – God- with-us.
