“Blessed are those who remember for through them light will shine from the past into the future.” These “beatitude like” words were put together 15 years ago as part of a service here at Riverside. As the calendar turns to November the importance and blessing of memory comes into focus. November 1st is All Saints Day and as part of our service on the 3rd we share in a time of candle lighting remembering those who have died. And then on Nov 10th, we will share in an act of remembrance as we prepare for the importance of November 11th.
Memory is a way in which light shines from the past into the future. Memory roots our lives in tradition and wisdom and enables us to move into the future with a deeper sense of meaning.
So, as we live in this time of memory and meaning, may we reflect on those who have gone before us and cherish the ways that they have revealed the light of compassion, vision and truth.
We remember and give thanks for the cloud of witnesses who have gone before us.
